A $1,000 JEDI Mini-Grant from the North Country Trail Association helped fund a five-day program across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for 28 Detroiters, run in partnership with Detroit Outdoors.

The week was centered on Munising and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and timed to Michigan Ice Fest, where participants climbed ice on the Lake Superior shore. Twenty-four of the twenty-eight participants were from communities historically underrepresented in ice climbing and outdoor recreation more generally.

Detroit Outdoors built the group and led it. Get Outside Bus carried the people, the winter equipment and the food, and worked with the organizers on the logistics of a February week that far north.

The North Country Trail Association’s JEDI Mini-Grants support work that widens who gets to use the trail and the lands around it.

The program was later covered by Planet Detroit.

“February in the Upper Peninsula is no joke! Thanks to the NCTA, and our coalition partners in Detroit, for being brave enough to make it happen. We’re happy to be able to make sure distance and cold are both barriers that can be overcome.”
