Certifications and short courses for community leaders, educators, guides and program staff who want to take more people outside, more skilfully.
Every course here is taught by Get Outside Coaches who run programs the rest of the year. Some end in a national certification, some in a certificate of completion, and some are simply a good afternoon of practice.
Build the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead more inclusive, accessible and equitable outdoor experiences.
Learn the foundational principles of Leave No Trace and how to minimise your impact while enjoying and protecting the outdoors.
Go deeper with advanced Leave No Trace skills, ethics and leadership for educators, guides and outdoor professionals.
Gain the knowledge and hands-on practice to confidently and safely administer epinephrine in an emergency.
Hands-on learning in outdoor skills like navigation, campcraft, backpacking, outdoor cooking and more.
Most of these can be run for your organization on your own dates. Tell us who you are training and what you need them to walk away with.
Start the conversationRather than run an isolated staff training, we open our doors - and our tents - to anyone looking to grow as an outdoor leader. With a specific lens on inclusion in outdoor spaces, we provide training and support for operating multi-day overnight outdoor experiences for all ages.
A diverse cross-section of community leaders, guides, counsellors and youth leaders, alongside our own staff.
Camping skills, tools for partnership and reciprocity in outdoor work, and an understanding of leadership as a system and a process.
Levels run across a weekend and the following week, and you can take the part that fits.
Together, outside, for the duration - which is part of the training.
A two-day certification from the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics: at least 16 hours of instruction and 10 hours in the field, with more than half the course spent outdoors. Graduates can lead Leave No Trace Skills Courses and Workshops in their own community.
Taught as practical decisions people actually face outside, not as a list to memorise.
The course is about how to pass the principles on, with time spent practising that.
Extra time on advocating inclusively and with cultural humility, the history of American land ethic, and teaching methods that current research supports.
Anyone leading groups outside who wants a credential behind what they already teach.
A five-day certification for people who want to teach Level 1 courses themselves, going past the principles into ethics, judgement and how to build a Leave No Trace culture in a program.
Ethics, judgement and the reasoning underneath the guidance.
Building a Leave No Trace culture across a program rather than a single session.
Taught outside, across five days.
A Level 2 course has to be led by a Level 3 instructor, and we are one of very few independent organizations nationally with one.
Wisconsin's 2021 Act 218, known as Dillon's Law, allows trained people to carry and administer epinephrine to someone experiencing anaphylaxis, whether or not the prescription is their own. We are certified instructors for the Wisconsin Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons curriculum behind that law, and we run these courses in partnership with the Dillon Mueller Memorial Fund.
The signs and symptoms, and how quickly they move.
Hands-on practice with trainers, so the first time is not in an emergency.
What happens after a dose, and how to store epinephrine properly in a program setting.
A one-hour certification to carry and administer, or a three-hour course that also qualifies you to train others.
Organizations that take the training also receive guidance on obtaining free or low-cost epinephrine. A free EpiPen twin-pack has been available to participating organizations while supplies last.
Hands-on sessions from fifteen minutes to an hour, taught with materials carried on the bus. They run at events, at partner sites, and as add-ons to longer trainings. These are general outdoor skills rather than certification courses, so there is no prerequisite and nothing to pass.
Reading a topographic map, and digital tools for finding public land and campsites.
Choosing and setting up a campsite, tent set-up, knots and shelter.
Stoves, meal planning and cooking for a group outside.
What to carry, and field repairs on real damaged equipment.
Named sessions in rotation include Get Warm, Stay Warm; The 10 Essentials; Squiggles Made Simple; Gear Guru; Find Your Spot; Classy Camps; and Leave No Trace: Camping with Care.
