Our History
Get Outside Bus was founded as The Bus for Outdoor Access & Teaching in 2019. Known colloquially as “the BOAT bus,” or “BOAT,” we expanded rapidly after the pandemic due to outsized demand. We rebranded in 2026 in an effort to better explain that we are not a nautical vessel. Still, many of our records will show our previous name.
While the name has changed, the core essence of the work remains:
- Outdoor Access refers to our efforts to make experiential residential and travel based experiences more accessible.
- Teaching refers to our efforts to support and coach diverse community leaders seeking to use these experiences.

Our Mission
The Get Outside Bus strives to empower impact organizations to get more people outside.
We empower community leaders with resources and coaching, helping them build their own travel and residential experiential programs. By honoring and enabling the vision of others, we leverage the power of time outside to help our partners achieve their mission.
Annual Reports
990s and other disclosures
Our fiscal year runs from 12/1 to 11/30 each year. As such, 990s may appear to reflect the calendar year from much of the prior year.
For example, our 2024 Fiscal Year starts in December of 2024, but it ends in November of 2025. As such, it is considered “2024,” and the 2024 990 will come out in early 2026.
